Apple Crumble

A simple but mouth-watering recipe, which can be served with Vanilla ice-cream, thick cream or custard.

Ingredients

For the apple filling :
  • Green Apples ....... 5 - 6 pcs

  • Brown sugar ........ 70 g

  • Butter ................ 50 g

  • Ground cinnamon ... 1 pinch

For the crumble :
  • Butter ................ 25 g

  • Brown sugar ......... 25 g

  • Flour .................. 50 g

How to...

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

2. Peeled, cored and slice into large pieces.

3. Place the brown sugar and butter in a pan, cook over a low heat, stirring until the butter has melted.

4. Put the apple chunks into the pan, add a pinch of ground cinnamon. Allow to stew gently for half an hour or until the liquid is almost gone, stirring occasionally with a silicon scraper. Keep checking as they can easily burn at the beginning.

5. The apples should be soft but not puréed. Put the apples into the serving dish.

6. Place the flour and sugar in a large bowl and mix well. Cut butter into small pieces. Butter shouldbe very cold, straight from refrigerator or freezer.

7. Taking a few cubes of butter at a time rub into the flour mixture with your fingers. Keep rubbing until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. This can be done with the fingers, but work quickly so that warmth of hands does not melt butter. (If butter begins to melt, place bowl in refrigerator for several minutes, then continue.)

8. Cover the stewed apples with the crumble topping, without pressing down.

9. Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown and crunchy. Please do keep an eye on the timing.

10. Serve it hot with Vanilla Ice-cream.
